Besides her education at the Vrije Academie in The Hague, Lia Harkes also pursued further studies in filming and editing at 'The College of Multi Media' and 'Open Studio', both in Amsterdam. She is also a graduate in psychology at the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden.

She has transformed significant locations in the public space such as the Hofvijver, the Boulevard and the Port of Scheveningen in The Hague as well as the Leuvehoofd in Rotterdam into a totally new experience. Employing film projection on water, light, laser animations and sound, she mesmerizes the publc, immersing them an illusion. She workes on these large projects with Peter ten Wolde, under the name Harkes/Ten Wolde.
In paintings, videos or installations, Lia Harkes investigates the experience of hidden emotions and desires. In the series 'Re-imaging Waste', she conducts research on consumerism. The succes of Craig's List and Marktplaats shows that things discarded by one person can satisfy the longings of another.
