Maria Neefjes (Noordwijk aan Zee) grew up in a large, art minded family, full of stories and music. After her Art Education at the K.A.B.K. (Royal Art Academy in the Hague), she lived for ten years with the composer Otto Ketting, father of their daughter Sophie Ketting. Sophie is costume designer for Opera and Theater. When she met her present husband Rob van Hagen at the airport of Cairo, from the very first day on, traveling was most important in their life.
Since her start as an artist in 1982 Maria Neefjes painted a lot in commission and had yearly recurring solo-exhibitions in the Netherlands as well as abroad: Spain, France, Belgium, US, Japan, Hong Kong, Portugal and Danmark. Her work consists mainly of tempera and oil paintings on linnen, as well as gouaches and graphics. The art-work of Maria Neefjes has been spread all over the world in possession of collectors, museums and companies.
Triple A Projects brings you the nine-part series 'The Lamp Bearer' in which Maria Neefjes walks the thin line between recognizable / familiar and abstract. With gouache / print on paper 'The Lamp Bearer' enters the same room repeatedly. On the foreground we see the bed for the loving couple, often burried under so many layers of linnen that the bed resembles an abstract mountainous landscape. The series 'The Lamp Bearer' shows the intensity and glowing colours which mark the work of Maria.
